Guinea Pig Hutch / Hamster Cage DIY

I just finished building a cage for my 7 year old daughter who is getting a new Guinea Pig as a pet. I have never seen the type of cage that was necessary so I had to go by a drawing that my daughter did for me. I couldn't find much information on the web for a DIY cage, but there is plenty on cages that you can buy.

A cage like this being built with a timber frame, plywood walls and galvanised mesh ends up being quite heavy, so I incorporated 2 wheels (old training wheels from an old bike) on one end and a handle on the other so it will be easy to move around the yard as necessary.

My daughter isn't home from school, so I don't know the verdict yet, but here are some pictures of the finished product.

just a slight problem,...............

the bottom of the cage is going to have to be filled, it can't just be blank. try putting wood on the underneath so you little guy can't get away.

guinea pigs are very sneaky and you might have to buy a new one the next day if you don't put a bottom on it:P

If you look closely you will see the bottom of the cage is also meshed the same as the sides. This way the guinea pig cannot escape, is very safe from dogs, but can also eat fresh grass as you move the cage around your yard.

Just wondering how well this worked out.

Guinea pigs have very delicate feet and that mesh should be covered with a towel at the least to protect the animal.

There is a TON of stuff on building cages at www.cavyspirit.com and all of it pre-dates your post by at least two years.

The cage is working out quite well and no problems with the feet as the cage is mainly sitting in the yard on grass. The grass sticks through the mesh so the feet shouldn't touch the mesh much at all. The mesh is there so there is access to fresh grass, which guinea pigs absolutely can't get enough of.

Hey,
The cage looks very good, actually. You are smart guy, it seems.
I found very many beautiful cages in the website
guinea pig cage and the prices too very low comparatively others. Ofcourse I immediately purchased two cages for my guinea pigs, as i have 4 pigs. They are very wide and much comfortable than earlier to move hear and there. Am planning for two more to keep each pig in each case as I really found the cages are quite low rated!
